Paul H. Ernest, M.D. founded Specialty Eye Institute in 1978 and is now an eminent ophthalmologist, but his educational foundation started out very differently. In his undergraduate days at Northwestern University, Dr. Paul H. Ernest was a dedicated engineering major for three years and even took an engineering internship with Ford Motor Company before the rewarding field of medicine beckoned.

After he witnessed his grandmother’s successful corneal transplant surgery, he focused his education on ophthalmology. Both his doctorate and his residency were completed at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. In addition, Dr. Paul H. Ernest also served a fellowship at Wayne State University’s Kresge Eye Institute. Dr. Ernest specializes in cornea and anterior segment surgery. He is committed to the people of Michigan is evident to this day.

Solving patients’ problems in a focused, detail-oriented way is something that Dr. Ernest prides himself on. He has retained the meticulousness of his engineering training and applied it to his current team-based approach to his work. Dr. Ernest is quick to praise his colleagues for being highly qualified and communicative. He says of himself and his fellow doctors, “We’re tight-knit and will stop at nothing to achieve our patients’ goals.”

Jonathan Bernstein, M.D., is a vitreoretinal specialist. He was attracted to ophthalmology and more specifically to the field of retina-vitreous surgery because it is a unique combination of medicine and microsurgery which he finds fascinating. But more importantly, Dr. Bernstein appreciates helping others by restoring their precious gift of sight. He had wonderful and inspiring role models in his father and an uncle who were both physicians and surgeons.

Dr. Bernstein has presented at numerous conferences and conducted research, all of which further his knowledge base and provide his patients with a better understanding of their condition. Recalling the start of his ophthalmology residency, Dr. Bernstein remembers how limited treatment options were for sight-threatening diseases of the retina and vitreous.

He says, “Today, we are able to treat serious conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and uveitis with novel medications.”

Raphael Addiego, M.D

Raphael Addiego, M.D. - Ophthalmologist

May 27, 1961 – March 5, 2023

It is with a heavy heart that Specialty Eye Institute announces the sudden passing of one of our own physicians, Raphael Addiego, MD. Raphael was a Retina Specialist for Specialty Eye Institute for more than 15 years.

He attended Johns Hopkins as an undergraduate then onto Thomas Jefferson Medical College. He graduated residency from New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and completed his Retina Fellowship at Retina Associates of Cleveland/Mt. Sinai with Tom Rice, MD. He came to the Great Lakes State, to practice medicine in Lansing, from the New Jersey shore, a boy who grew up with the love of the sea. He enjoyed boating, reading and a good laugh with friends. Dr. Addiego was the definition of an altruistic physician and was beyond dedicated to his patients and his practice. His care for patients surpassed the clinic, from seeing patients in their homes to helping them pay for medical bills that were unrelated to their eye care. He was not one to ask for the limelight in his efforts, but those of us that were aware of his generosity thought he deserved more recognition.

He passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep on March 5th, 2023 at the age of 61. He is survived by his lovely wife and their four children. We will miss his dry humor, his clinical acumen, and his unwavering ethical standards.
